Selsey inshore lifeboat (ILB) Betty and Thomas Moore launched at 5:14pm followed shortly after at 5:17pm by the all weather lifeboat (ALB) Voluntary Worker to assist the 25 foot yacht Karla with 2 persons on board (a man and his 9 year old son), which had run aground on the Mixon Rocks approximately 1.25 miles south of the lifeboat station.

The ILB was first on scene at 5:17pm and quickly attached a towline to the casualty. On a rising tide the yacht Karla was pulled clear of the rocks by 5:20pm. Voluntary Worker arrived on scene at 5:23pm and transferred the 2nd Coxswain David Lamdin aboard the casualty to assist the yacht’s skipper and assess the situation. It was decided that due adverse tide conditions the best option was to tow the Karla to the safety of Chichester Harbour. The tow was transferred from the ILB to the ALB at 5:40pm and a course set for Chichester Harbour.

At 5:56pm the Betty and Thomas Moore was released to return to station arriving back at 6:02pm, rehoused straight away and was ready for service once more at 6:30pm.

Voluntary Worker meanwhile continued towing the casualty to Chichester Harbour which was reached at approximately 7:05pm. Once inside the harbour the tow was handed over to the Hayling Island lifeboat at 7:21pm - who were returning from another service call. Voluntary Worker was released to return to station arriving back at 8:20pm, rehoused straight away and was again ready for service at 9:30pm.
