Selsey lifeboat station's reserve all weather lifeboat ‘George Gibson’ was launched at 5:19pm to assist the 9 metre German motor boat ‘Nordic Dawn’ with two male crew on board. The crew were worried by the sea conditions and struggling to make a course for Chichester Harbour whilst keeping the boat heading straight into the weather, which was taking them further out to sea into worsening conditions.

The lifeboat finally caught up with the casualty at 5:54pm, approximately 4 miles south of Chichester Harbour. With the reassurance of the lifeboat in close proximity the skipper was coaxed into altering his course to the north. 'Nordic Dawn' then followed the lifeboat at a good speed of approximately 9 knots, making the entrance to Chichester Harbour by 6:24pm. At 6:31pm the casualty was handed over to the Chichester Harbour launch who escorted the 'Nordic Dawn' to a safe mooring.

At 6:37pm the reserve lifeboat George Gibson and crew were released to return to station arriving back at 7:30pm. Rehousing took place straight away and the lifeboat made ready for service once more by 7:50pm.
