Selsey RNLI Lifeboat went to the aid of the 10-metre dive boat 'Cast-away' which had broadcast a distress call. The vessel reported gearbox problems in a position 6.5 miles south west of Selsey Lifeboat station.
'Cast-away' had a party of seven divers on board and was out of Littlehampton Harbour. Selsey Lifeboat crew were paged at 10.11 a.m. on Sunday 26th April 2015. The Tyne class Lifeboat 'Voluntary Worker' launched at 10.22 a.m. and proceeded to the position of 'Cast-away'.
The weather on scene was wind north easterly force 3 with a slight sea state and overcast sky. The dive boat had reported that they had a line in their propeller and a diver could free it once the Lifeboat arrived on scene.
At 10.50 a.m. 'Voluntary Worker' was alongside 'Cast-away' and a tow was established between the two vessels. When the line was freed from the propeller the tow commenced towards Littlehampton Harbour.
As 'Voluntary Worker' could not enter the harbour due to tide the Littlehampton Lifeboat 'Blue Peter 1' had been requested to take over the tow to enter the harbour. At 1.10 p.m. the tow was passed to Littlehampton Lifeboat and Selsey Lifeboat was released by Solent Coastguard to return to Selsey.
'Voluntary Worker' arrived back at station at 2.00 p.m. and was rehoused straight away.
