Selsey RNLI Inshore Lifeboat Rescues Paddleboarder

Paddleboarder Paddleboarder

The 'D' class inshore Lifeboat (ILB) was launched at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday 4th August after the UK Coastguard received reports from the public saying a paddleboarder had fallen from his board and was struggling to get back on approximately half a mile off shore from Barrack Lane, Aldwick near Bognor Regis.

After launching the ILB, with a crew of three volunteers, made best speed to the area. As the ILB arrived in the approximate position the Coastguard were able to give directions whilst talking on the phone to the first informant. The ILB crew soon spotted the paddleboard and person and closed the position. The man was clinging to the board with no lifejacket or buoyancy aid and exhausted. The ILB crew quickly hauled him into the ILB and carried out a casualty care assessment whilst taking him to the shore where his family were waiting. The weather on scene was calm conditions in sunshine.

After reaching the beach the casualty was taken up to his family and the Lifeboat crewman waited with him until the arrival of Selsey and Littlehampton Coastguard Rescue teams. Upon their arrival he was handed over to them and the ILB returned to Selsey. The ILB returned to station at 8.17 p.m. and was recovered straight away, washed down and made ready for service.

ILB CREW: Sam Corcoran-Smith (Helmsman), Max Wiseman, and Neil Hopcraft.

SHORE CREW: Simon Hutt (Head Launcher) and Richard Brady (Bobcat driver).
